| First Gen, EDC chiefs power up CSR expo |
![]() THE Lopez Group Foundation Inc. (LGFI) and Energy Development Corporation (EDC) played an active part as gold sponsors in the League of Corporate Foundations’ 8th CSR Expo held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay. With the theme of “Business Unusual-S.O.S. (Skills, Opportunities, Sustainability),” the CSR Expo had for plenary speakers Federico R. Lopez of First Gen and Paul Aquino of EDC, who spoke on how CSR is integrated into their company’s corporate strategy and how CSR is needed now more than ever. In his speech, Lopez explained how geothermal reservoirs are recharged naturally by means of rainwater, making it necessary to preserve forest cover in the areas surrounding EDC’s geothermal wells. To prevent illegal logging, they used to employ forest guards, but now that communities are more organized—due mainly to the company’s education and livelihood efforts—there is less need for forest guards. Aquino, in his talk on crafting a national vision for CSR, stated that “gone are the days when corporations just go about their business detached from the larger society and unmindful of their social and ecological footprints.” “As history has shown,” he said, “businesses must adapt to the new milieu, in this case, the milieu of CSR, if they are to stay long in business. It’s either 10things you can do to help save Mother Earth Artworks from: www.ciwmb.ca.gov/gallery/wasteprev/wpclp6.htm they shape up, or they go the way of the dinosaurs.” The two-day CSR Expo also had a trade exhibit where Meralco Millennium Foundation Inc. and LGFI-EDC-First Gen had booths. Interactive games made the LGFI-EDC-First Gen green booth one of the most popular, with prizes and giveaways donated by ABS-CBN Corporation, First Philippine Holdings Corporation, Knowledge Channel, EDC and LGFI. Other members of the Lopez Group that participated in the expo included Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc., Meralco Management and Leadership Development Center, ANC as broadcast media partner, and the Lopez Lifelong Wellness Group.
