In every child’s journey, teachers stand as silent heroes, inspiring and shaping the hearts and minds of our future generations. With the conclusion of the National Teachers’ Month (NTM) and the National Teachers’ Day (October 5) celebrations, we dedicate a moment of hurrahs to their unwavering dedication and the varied pivotal roles that they play in paving ways in our children’s lives.
The challenges our teachers face remain ever present. We are aware of the many things that they do in and out of the classroom and the limited resources that they stretch so they can do their jobs. International and national tests reveal stark difficulties of the Filipino children in reading, science and math. A report by the World Bank in 2022 revealed a staggering 90.9% of Filipino 10-year-olds struggle with basic reading. The list of woes is endless. These demand immediate attention from the education system and those in the public and private sectors, like the Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI).
As the 2023 NTM spokesperson for the private sector, I am profoundly honored to collaborate with various wellmeaning initiatives to address the challenges faced by our teachers. Collaboration and partnerships have always been a Knowledge Channel Foundation staple in our efforts to help improve education and, in the process, the life of the Filipino.
One of our key initiatives is developing and providing relevant and accessible video lessons and complementary resources for effective teaching and learning. Through our platforms such as Knowledge Channel on cable, direct-tohome and digital terrestrial TV, online on iWantTFC and YouTube, and offline through Knowledge Channel TV and the Knowledge Channel Portable Media Library, we equip teachers with tools to better facilitate learning in various subjects and grade levels.
We also offer comprehensive training and mentorship programs for teachers, equipping them with effective 21st century teaching strategies. These programs emphasize outcomes-based approaches, including the integration of media and technology, to better engage today’s learners.
We are equally committed to supporting child development workers and teachers or CDW/ Ts and other care providers of children who play a crucial role in early childhood development (ECD). At the recent monitoring activity of our ECD pilot area in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, we were thrilled to witness how wholeheartedly they embraced and applied the ECD concepts that we shared with them in a three-day training program that we conducted early this year. We take good note of how the local government and other community stakeholders whom we have been engaging for the project have been actively involved in ensuring that our initiative becomes organic and sustained in the community.
Our teachers are the guiding stars of our children, so they may dream and so they may be capable of realizing those dreams. They deserve our unwavering support every single day.
