Reflecting on the incredible journey of the Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI), I am filled with immense gratitude to you, my Kapamilya. On June 14, 2024, we celebrated 25 years since the Lopez Group aspired to transform education in the Philippines. What began as a dream to harness the power of television to improve the lives of Filipinos through quality education has grown into a powerful movement that has touched millions of lives.
As we look back, the impact of KCFI is visible in countless success stories across the nation. I recall visiting remote schools in far-flung areas where children eagerly gathered around a small television, their eyes wide with wonder as they learned about the world beyond their barangays. Such moments remind us of the power of educational media to ignite curiosity and inspire dreams of brighter futures. Many adults today were once learners who sang theme songs of our shows. Some, like the mayor we met a few months ago and various executives and staff of public and private organizations, fondly remember watching Knowledge Channel videos in school or at home, where their love for learning was nurtured through our engaging edutainment. These generational impacts highlight what we have done, continue to do, and aim to keep doing.
When I envisioned the Knowledge Channel, our goal was simple yet significant: to improve the lives of Filipinos, especially the poor and marginalized, through quality education delivered via television.
You, our Lopez Group Kapamilya, were our early supporters. First Philippine Holdings Corporation, Lopez Holdings (then called Benpres Holdings), SKYcable and ABS-CBN provided the foundation upon which KCFI was built. Over the years, many other companies and individuals within and outside the Lopez Group have contributed to KCFI’s mission.
While KCFI’s biggest supporter through the years was my father, former chairman emeritus Oscar M. Lopez, I am extremely grateful to the many Lopez Group companies, executives and employees who have supported KCFI in various ways—from structural support to our fundraising efforts, volunteering to support our lean manpower, joining us as teachers for a day in the schools we support and being KCFI advocates.
These contributions, along with the unwavering support of the members of KCFI’s previous and current board of trustees, have been integral to KCFI’s success and longevity.
Over the past 25 years, our commitment to education has evolved from being a cable TV channel that airs curriculumbased shows into a full learning ecosystem. Today, we continue to produce and acquire thousands of curriculum-based video lessons, interactive educational games and session guides, distributing them through on-air, online and offline platforms. We also provide skills development opportunities to child development workers and teachers (CDW/ Ts), basic education teachers and other childcare providers. More than 10,000 child development centers, elementary and high schools, and Alternative Learning System community learning centers nationwide have access to KCFI multimedia learning resources. We have trained thousands of CDW/Ts, teachers and other childcare providers.
Studies on KCFI interventions show tremendously improved learning, affective and behavioral outcomes. All these achievements are because of you and your efforts to create a better Philippines through the success of our companies and philanthropic endeavors.
Kapamilya, your unwavering belief in our vision has made all the difference. Looking ahead, our commitment remains steadfast in addressing our children’s needs. The future holds even greater promise for transforming education and enriching the lives of Filipino children and their families.
