The month of May was both full and fulfilling for all of us at the Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI).Teachers attend their school’s watch party for ‘WATCH. LEARN. TEACH. with Knowledge Channel: An Online Training Series for Teachers on Break
On May 23 and 30, we hosted “WATCH. LEARN. TEACH. With Knowledge Channel: An Online Training Series for Teachers on Break.” This free online training was specially designed for kinder to Grade 3 teachers to strengthen their skills in teaching reading and math—two areas that are absolutely essential during a child’s formative years.
Using our flagship programs “Wikaharian,” “Ready, Set, Read!” and “MathDali,” we shared practical and engaging strategies to help teachers create student-centered lessons. The Professional Regulation Com mission awarded four Continu ing Professional Development points to the first 50,000 reg istered participants. We were thrilled to see the sessions reach far beyond that number, with over 243,000 views for our reading session and more than 200,000 views for the one on math.
I’m grateful to City Savings Bank for supporting the outreach effort that brought in over 27,000 teachers who joined us live. Many more gathered in schools across the country for watch parties—a wonderful example of how learning can be both communal and impactful. We purposely scheduled the training during the summer break to give teachers the space and time to recharge and prepare. Our hope is that they carry these new tools and ideas into their classrooms, helping their students learn with joy, confidence and understanding.
We were also overjoyed by the recent signing of Republic Act 12199, the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) System Act, into law on May 8, 2025. This landmark legislation brings long-overdue national attention and resources to the critical early years of a child’s life—when more than 80% of brain development takes place.
The law mandates the establishment of ECCD offices in every province, city and municipality, and requires each barangay to have a child development center staffed by a regularly appointed child development teacher. Most meaningfully, it lifts the professional status of child development workers through standardized salaries and expanded access to training and scholarships via CHED and TESDA. These long-awaited reforms will help ensure that the people entrusted with our youngest learners are supported, recognized and empowered to deliver quality early education.
I’m especially grateful to have been part of the early conversations that helped shape this law. Three years ago, I reached out to Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian to share our growing concern about early childhood development in the Philippines. With the support of the Asia Philanthropy Circle and other advocates, we brought forward data on high-stunting rates and alarmingly low participation in early learning programs. I am grateful for the openness and commitment our legislators showed throughout this process—what began as a conversation has now become a law that promises real and lasting change for our children.
Another highlight this season is our ongoing partnership with Bloomberry Cultural Foundation Inc. (BCFI), which generously funded the production of 215 new video lessons to boost reading skills among children aged three to eight. We are truly grateful to BCFI for their generous support and shared belief in the power of education to transform lives. This year, we are developing 120 of these episodes, including 10 new episodes of “Musikan tahan,” 20 episodes of “Kinder Yes!” and 45 episodes each of “Ready, Set, Read!” for Grades 2 and 3.
These form part of our “Basa Bilang” program designed to strengthen foundational reading and numeracy skills. Our goal is clear: to ensure that by the age of 10, every Filipino child can read with comprehension and solve everyday math problems with confidence. Through these programs, we hope to respond to the country’s learning crisis with a blend of hope, science and creativity.
As we welcome school year 2025-2026, KCFI remains deeply committed to its mission: to reach more and teach more, making learning happen anytime and anywhere—especially for those with the least access. We will continue to provide curriculum-aligned content across our on-air, online and offline platforms while also equipping teachers, child development workers, parents and local government partners through meaningful training and capacity-building.
On June 14, we celebrated 26 years of bringing transformative learning to Filipino children through media and technology. Behind every video, training and partnership is a heart that believes in the boundless potential of every child and in the power of a teacher to change lives.
