A deep-cleaning service for eyelids is now available at Asian Eye Institute to offer immediate relief to blepharitis patients.
Blepharitis is an uncomfortable eye condition caused by swelling of the eyelids. According to Asian Eye cornea and external diseases specialist Dr. Sharlene Noguera, it results when there is bacteria buildup along the eyelids and eyelashes.
“There are oil glands at the edges of our eyelids. If these oil glands are clogged or are producing oil irregularly, it creates a good environment for bacteria to grow,” Noguera says.
Normally affecting both eyelids, patients suffer from itchy, scaly eyelids.
“Some may even have their eyelids sticking together and wake up with flaky crust on their eyelashes,” she adds.
Immediate relief
Blepharitis can worsen dry eyes, a condition that causes redness, itchiness, excessive tearing and a feeling like there is something in your eyes.
There is a new procedure that offers effective and immediate relief from blepharitis—BlephEx.
“Keeping the eyelids clean is the only way to keep the symptoms of blepharitis at bay. Home scrubs, warm compresses and use of lubricating eye drops can help soothe the symptoms, but BlephEx actually allows us to eliminate the cause of swelling or irritation through microblepharoexfoliation,” Noguera explains. “We use a handheld rotating device with a small sponge at one end to gently but thoroughly clean the clogged oil glands and remove debris along the edges of eyelids and eyelashes.”
While BlephEx is a relatively new procedure, it does not cause discomfort and has no downtime.
‘Massage on eyelids’
“This is just a 10-minute outpatient procedure and is painless. It can be ticklish, but most of our patients who tried it described it as like having a massage on their eyelids,” Noguera says.
While BlephEx patients may experience instant improvement, they are advised to undergo this procedure at least every three to six months and continue to observe proper eyelid hygiene practices. Aside from blepharitis patients, BlephEx may be recommended to patients who wear contact lenses regularly and those with dry eyes.
